The UAE running season is back. The Dubai Fitness Challenge runs from 31 October to 29 November, and Dubai Run starts on Sheikh Zayed Road at 6:30am on Sunday 22 November. That morning the sun rises at 6:40am, ten minutes after the start.
That is the winter problem in one line. Summer is about surviving the heat. Winter is about light that changes during a single run, a low sun in your eyes, humid mornings and lenses that fog the second you step out of the air-con. Here is how to pick a pair that handles all of it.

What changes in a UAE winter
The National Centre of Meteorology puts average winter highs at 24-27°C and lows at 14-16°C, with average humidity of 55-64%. It also notes that fog can form in the early morning when humidity is high and winds are light.
December is usually the most humid stretch. NCM figures put mean December humidity around 63%, with maximum readings often between 79% and 90%.
The light changes too. In November, sunrise in Dubai moves from 6:26am to 6:46am, and sunset sits around 5:30pm. If you run before work or after it, you will start in one kind of light and finish in another.
Lens: match the tint to the light
Lens darkness is measured by how much visible light gets through (VLT). Under the ISO 12312-1 standard, sunglass lenses fall into categories:
- Category 1: 43-80% of light gets through. A light tint for low or changing light.
- Category 2: 18-43%. A medium tint for everyday sun.
- Category 3: 8-18%. A dark tint for strong sun, beaches and bright roads.
Tint and UV protection are separate things. A lens's UV blocking comes from the lens material, not its colour. Every pair in this guide is UV400, which blocks UVA and UVB.
For dawn and dusk runs: photochromic lenses
A photochromic lens gets darker as the light gets stronger and lighter as it fades. For a run that starts in the dark and finishes in full sun, this is the lens to have.
Blue Hour Burn - Pacer Series (AED 189) has an orange-red Category 1-3 photochromic lens, so it moves from a light tint to a dark one as the sun comes up. Fade to Fajr - Glider Series (AED 189) and Violet Mood Swing - Pacer Series (AED 189) also have lenses that adapt to the light.

"Perfect for early mornings or evening sessions. Really lightweight and great quality" - Khalid, Fade to Fajr
For full sun and water: polarised dark lenses
Polarised lenses cut the glare that bounces off flat surfaces like water, wet roads and glass. If your long run is on the Corniche, Kite Beach or past glass towers, a darker polarised lens is the better choice.
Sultan's Shade - Glider Series (AED 189) has a polarised black mirror lens. The Gulf is Clear - Glider Series (AED 189) has a polarised blue lens with an anti-fog and hydrophobic coating.
Fit: the pair has to stay put
The lens does not matter if the frame bounces. Our size guide lists the signs of a bad fit. If they are too loose, they slide down your nose, bounce when you run or let light in at the sides. If they are too tight, they leave red marks on your nose or press behind your ears.
The two performance series are built differently:
- Glider Series: a frameless wraparound weighing 22 grams, with anti-slip temple grips. It gives the widest view and the most coverage.
- Pacer Series: a half frame that keeps airflow high. Customers often mention a snug fit that suits racing and cycling.
Both use TR90 frames and a hydrophilic grip that gets grippier when wet, which matters when you are sweating through a humid December morning.
"These fit tighter so they dont easily fall off when cycling or racing ORC. Great product!" - Fathma, Dune and Dusted
That is Dune and Dusted - Pacer Series (AED 189).
Fog: why it happens and how to stop it
Your lenses fog for a simple reason. Leave a cold, air-conditioned flat or car and walk into humid air, and the cold lens cools the air touching it below its dew point. The moisture condenses into tiny droplets on the lens. The fog clears once the lens warms up to the outside temperature.
Winter mornings here are cooler, but they are still humid, so the 5am walk from the car to the start line is when it happens. A few things help:
- Do not leave your sunglasses on the dashboard under the air-con vent on the drive to a race.
- Take them out of the case a few minutes before you start, so the lens warms to the outside air.
- Wear them on your cap or carry them during the warm-up, then put them on once you are moving.
- Choose a frame that lets air flow behind the lens. Half frames and wraparounds with vents help here.
- Clean them with a microfibre cloth, not your sweaty shirt, which smears the lens.
Runnies performance lenses have an anti-fog coating, and the frame design does the rest.
"Feather light non-slip fit through sweaty Kite beach runs, polarized lenses kill glare and sand reflection and ventilation beats humidity and fog." - Rachel W., The Gulf is Clear

FAQ
Do I need sunglasses for winter running in the UAE?
Yes, for most runs. The winter sun sits lower in the sky, so on morning and evening runs it is often right in your eyes. If you run in full darkness with no glare at all, you can leave them off. For runs that cross sunrise or sunset, a photochromic lens covers both.
Are photochromic lenses dark enough for midday sun?
Blue Hour Burn's lens is rated Category 1-3, so at its darkest it reaches Category 3, the tint for strong sun. If most of your running is in full midday sun, a polarised dark lens like Sultan's Shade is the simpler choice.
What is the difference between polarised and mirrored?
Polarisation cuts glare reflected off flat surfaces like water and roads. A mirror coating reflects light away from the front of the lens. Sultan's Shade has both.
How fast is delivery?
Next-day delivery in Dubai and 2-3 days to the rest of the UAE. Delivery is free on UAE orders over AED 200.
What if they do not fit?
You have 14 days to return them. Try them on a real run before you decide.
